The Difference Between Having Financials and Understanding Them
Most owners have a bookkeeper. Some have a CPA. They get statements every month. Most of those statements sit unread because nobody has ever walked the owner through what they actually mean for the business.
A bookkeeper produces the numbers. A CPA files them. Neither one sits down with you and explains what your gross margin is telling you, why your profit is flat despite growing revenue. What your true breakeven actually is.
That’s what a Financial Review is for.
What a Financial Review Is
A focused 1:1 session with a Service Excellence coach built entirely around your company’s financial statements.
You send your financials in advance. Your coach reviews them, identifies what the numbers are actually saying, and comes to the session prepared to walk you through the full picture. Margin performance. True breakeven. Cashflow risks. Pricing pressure. And the one or two things that need your attention this quarter.
This isn’t a general business conversation. It’s a working session built around your specific numbers.
Available to: Non-Seat Holders. Growth Partner Seat Holders receive a monthly Financial Review and Forecast, along with much more, as part of their engagement.
How It Works
1
Pre-Call: Define the Focus
Before anything else, you and your coach get on a call to define what you’re working on. What questions do you need answered? What decisions are you trying to make? What’s been unclear? This ensures the session is built around what matters most to you. Not a generic financial overview.
2
Coach Prep
Your coach reviews your submitted financials independently before the session. Identifying patterns. Flagging gaps. Preparing a clear walkthrough of what the numbers are telling the business. You don’t need to do anything for this step. It’s what makes the session productive rather than exploratory.
3
The Session: Walk Through the Numbers Together—the focused 1:1 session
Your coach walks you through your financial picture in plain language. What’s working. What’s concerning. What to focus on this quarter. No jargon. No assumptions that you already know what you’re looking at.
4
Follow-Up: Check the Process
After the session, your coach follows up to see how the clarity is landing and whether the actions from the session are moving forward.
What Gets Looked At
- Revenue trends and what they’re actually producing at the bottom line
- Gross margin by service line — where you’re making money and where you’re not
- True breakeven — what it actually costs to open the doors every day
- Cashflow patterns — why good months sometimes empty the account
- Pricing pressure — whether your current pricing is supporting the business or slowly eroding it
- The one or two things to fix this quarter
What You Walk Out With
Not a report. Not a spreadsheet. A clear understanding of your own financial picture and a specific, prioritized set of actions for the quarter ahead.
Most owners leave the session having learned more about their business in one hour than they learned from twelve months of monthly statements.
Who It’s For
The Financial Review is the right fit if:
- You don’t fully trust or fully understand your own financial statements
- Revenue is up, but profit isn’t moving, and you don’t know why
- You’re making major decisions — hiring, trucks, expansion — without financial clarity to back them up
- You check the bank balance and call the financial management
- You know your revenue number, but you couldn’t tell someone your true breakeven point

Frequently Asked Questions
I already have a bookkeeper and a CPA. Why do I need this?
Your bookkeeper produces the statements. Your CPA files the taxes. Neither one coaches you on what the numbers mean for the operating decisions you’re making right now. That’s a different job. It’s what this session is built for.
What financials do I need to send in advance?
Your coach will tell you exactly what to submit when you book. At a minimum, recent profit and loss statements and a balance sheet. The more current and complete the picture, the more useful the session.
Is this confidential?
Yes. Your financials are reviewed by your coach only and handled with complete confidentiality.
Who else should be in the session?
That’s up to you. Some owners bring their office manager or bookkeeper so everyone hears the same picture at the same time. Others prefer to take it in alone first—either works.
What’s the next step after the Financial Review?
If you want to turn the clarity from the session into a forward-looking plan — a budget you actually run the business against and a forecast tied to your operating decisions — the Budget Review & Forecast is the natural next step. It requires a completed Financial Review first, and picks up exactly where this session leaves off.
