The Difference Between a Plan and a Wish
Most home-service owners have a number in their head for the year. A revenue target. Maybe a rough idea of what they want to spend on trucks or headcount.
That’s not a budget. And it’s not a forecast.
A real budget tells you what the business needs to produce — by month, by service line, by role — to hit your goals and stay solvent. A real forecast tells you whether the decisions you’re about to make pencil out before you commit to them.
Without both, you’re running the business on feel. And feel works fine until it doesn’t. Usually, right around the moment a big expense hits, the account looks nothing like you expected.
What a Budget Review & Forecast Is
A focused 1:1 working session with a Service Excellence coach that takes your existing budget and financial plan and makes them better.
This session picks up where the Financial Review leaves off. The diagnosis is done. You know where you are. Now the work is to review what you’re operating against, identify where the numbers don’t hold up, make adjustments, and align the forecast with the operating decisions in front of you.
This is a review-and-refinement session. Not a full budget build from scratch. If your business doesn’t have a budget yet and needs one built from the ground up, that’s a more intensive project. The scope and investment scale depend significantly on the company’s size and the state of the books. Reach out to inquire about a full budget build.
Important: A completed Financial Review is required before booking this session. Without an accurate read of where the business currently stands, the review has nothing solid to work from.
Available to: Non-Seat Holders. Growth Partner Seat Holders receive a monthly Financial Review and Forecast, along with much more, as part of their engagement.
How It Works
1
Pre-Call: Define the Focus
You and your coach get on a call to define what you’re building. Are you planning for the year ahead? Evaluating a specific decision — a hire, a truck, a new market? The pre-call ensures the session is built around what you actually need. Not a generic budgeting exercise.
2
Coach Prep
Your coach reviews the findings of your Financial Review and prepares for the session independently. Building the framework, identifying the key variables and coming in ready to build the plan with you. You don’t need to do anything for this step. It’s what makes the session a working build rather than a starting-from-scratch conversation.
3
The Session: Build It Together—the focused 1:1 session
You and your coach build the budget and forecast together. Not a template handed over for you to fill in. A working session where the numbers get built around your business, your goals, and the decisions in front of you.
4
Follow-Up: Check the Process
After the session, your coach follows up to see how the plan is holding up and whether the forecast is tracking against what’s actually happening in the business.
What Gets Covered
- A review of your existing budget against your actual financial performance — where the numbers are holding and where they aren’t
- Identification of gaps, assumptions that don’t hold up, and areas where adjustments need to be made
- A rolling forecast aligned to your current revenue trends, cost structure, and the operating decisions in front of you
- Decision scenarios — what does adding a tech cost? What does a new truck do to cash flow? What does a slow month look like against fixed costs?
- Specific adjustments and prioritized next actions to bring the plan back into alignment with reality
What You Walk Out With
A cleaner plan. One that’s been reviewed by an outside set of eyes, adjusted where needed and aligned with where the business actually is. Not where you hoped it would be when you wrote the original numbers.
Most owners leave the session with a tighter forecast, a clearer picture of their operating margins, and the confidence to make near-term decisions based on numbers they actually trust.
Who It’s For
The Budget Review & Forecast is the right fit if:
- You’ve completed a Financial Review and want to pressure-test and refine the plan you’re operating against
- You have a budget, but suspect the numbers aren’t holding up against reality
- You’re about to make a major decision — a hire, a truck, a new market — and want to stress-test the forecast before you commit.
- Year-end keeps arriving with results that look nothing like what you expected, and you want to understand why
- You want a tighter, more reliable plan that your leadership team can actually operate from
Don’t have a budget yet? A full budget build is a more intensive project. The scope scales significantly depending on the size of the company and the state of the books. Reach out to inquire, and we’ll talk through what that looks like for your business.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to complete the Financial Review first?
Because a forecast built on an inaccurate picture of the current state is fiction. The Financial Review establishes where the business actually is. Margins. Breakeven. Cashflow patterns. Pricing reality. The Budget Review & Forecast builds forward from that foundation. Skip the foundation, and the plan doesn’t hold.
Can’t my accountant build a budget for me?
Your accountant builds financial statements. This session builds an operating plan. One that connects your revenue targets to your cost structure, your hiring decisions to your cash flow, and your goals to the numbers that actually support them. It’s a different job.
What if I’ve never had a formal budget before?
This session is a review and refinement. It works best when there’s something to review. If you don’t have a budget yet and need one built from scratch, that’s a different engagement—the scope and investment scale depending on the size of your company and the state of your books. Reach out to inquire about a full budget build.
How far out does the forecast go?
That depends on what you’re planning for. Most sessions produce a quarterly forecast with a full-year view if you’re evaluating a specific decision with a longer horizon — a major equipment purchase, a market expansion — the forecast can be built around that timeline.
What’s the difference between this and what a Growth Partner does monthly?
A Growth Partner Seat Holder gets a Financial Review and Forecast every month as part of their engagement. Ongoing. Iterative. Built into the rhythm of the business. This session is a one-time build for owners who want the plan without the ongoing engagement. If, after the session, you want that monthly rhythm, Growth Partner is the natural next step.
