Hi, my name is Caleb Mayfield and I am apprenticing at Service Excellence Training in Buda, Texas. I am here to learn all I can about the business side of things. I’m writing this blog specifically to the eighteen to twenty-four-year-olds who are apprenticing in any type of trades work (plumbing, electrical, roofing, HVAC). I intend to elaborate on my experience as an intern “of sorts” here at SET and give you some tips and information I’ve gathered so far.
These tips apply across the board; among all professions as young men and women of the future.
The first point I want to hit on is anxiety about your job. If you are new to your trade and don’t know the ropes, you may be experiencing some type of hesitance around your assignments. What I have learned is, yes, we will all go through new things and have to simply embrace the unknown. Ultimately that is what will drive you further into life. Whatever you are faced with, quite literally, push through it.
Something else I want to touch on is being coachable. Your superiors are there to help you and want you to succeed, for both your benefit and their’s as well. Do not be afraid to ask questions and learn what you must do in order to succeed at your job. Make yourself a sponge and soak in all the information that is made available to you. This builds your value as an apprentice and as a future employee, and will greatly benefit you in the long run.
Lastly, as blunt as it may sound, just do what you’re told and don’t question it. Yes, it may be new and a little scary. In just three short days here at SET, I’ve been put in new and foreign environments, but have actually felt myself coming out the other side with a greater knowledge of the situation. With that knowledge, I’ve become more confident and comfortable with myself.
To me, being an apprentice has been new and somewhat alien, but I can see it already shaping me for the future. So when you go to work, be open to all possibilities and soak in as much as you can. Believe in yourself, God, and as Sam Hinkie would say, “trust the process.” You never know where it will take you one day.
